About the Total Monthly Expenses Calculator

The occasional big-line household spends are ones on paper: housing, cars, food — the little ones add up too. Category totals reveal the truth: for most households, the largest single expense after housing is the one they never documented carefully.

This tool totals 7 practical categories with the percentage share of each, and identifies the largest bucket — which is exactly where the first savings opportunity usually hides.

The formula behind it

Offsets relative to income:

Total = Σ categories • Share% = category / total

Fill what actually arranges-headed whether you have it all converted or consolidated monthly aspects. Relative to your income — enter your after-tax monthly take-home — the tool also divides savings rate and flags items worth review.

Worked example

Defaults — a typical suburban household:

  1. Housing $1,600 (46.6%) — the largest single bucket, as usual.
  2. Food $650 (17.4%) is the next highest, with transport $400 (10.7%), etc.
  3. Total $3,730/month.

Takeaway: The top-3 categories (housing, food, transport) usually carry 70%+ of spend. If income is $4,500 net, savings left over = $770 — matching a standard 17% savings rate.

Frequently asked questions

Do I include annual bills like car insurance?

Convert them to monthly: an annual $1,200 charge is $100/month. This tool operates on average-monthly realities.

What about savings and investments?

Treat them separately — the tool reports how much you HAVE left, savings rate is computed against your monthly income as entered.

How do I handle variable months?

Average 3 months (with seasonal adjustments) before logging the bank monthly; enter what is normal, not what is aspirational.
