About the Loan Calculator

Whether the loan is a personal loan, a debt-payment consolidation loan, an equipment loan or something else fixed-rate, the same construct applies: a level payment, a level rate, and an amortizing balance. This tool answers the three questions every borrower has: what it costs monthly, what interest totals, and how expensive the money is in the end.

The total-interest figure is the one to interrogate — two loans can quote nearly the same payment with dramatically different lifetime cost depending on term and rate.

The formula behind it

Standard amortizing-payment formula:

M = P × r × (1+r)^n / ((1+r)^n − 1)

P is the amount financed, r = APR/12 per month, n = term in months. Total interest for the loan = M×n − P. The payment stays fixed every month; only the interest slice inside it changes as the balance falls.

Worked example

With the default inputs above:

  1. $20,000 at 7.5% APR for 5 years produces a payment of about $400.76.
  2. Over 60 payments, you would pay $24,045.60 in total.

Takeaway: That is $4,045.60 of interest — about 20% of the amount borrowed, entirely for the privilege of having the money sooner.

Frequently asked questions

What interest rate is realistic for me?

It depends mostly on your credit tier. As a rough anchor, mid-tier personal loans commonly price in the 8–15% band; subprime offers can exceed 30%. Shop offers and use real quotes, not guesses.

Does this calculator work for a line of credit?

Only if you would convert the outstanding balance into a fixed amortizing payment. Revolving credit behaves differently.

Why does the tool call this “total finance charge” sometimes missing fees?

The payment formula here bills interest only. Optional origination fees are excluded by default — the APR calculator handles fee-inclusive comparisons.
